Dr. Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi (B.R. Sarangi) is a distinguished jurist, erudite scholar and compassionate humanist whose life embodies an unwavering dedication to justice, integrity and selfless public service. Born on 20 July, 1962 as the youngest in the family in Pantikhari Sasan village near Odagaon in Nayagarh district, Justice Sarangi inherited a legacy of wisdom and service from his esteemed parents, Late Banchhanidhi Sarangi, a former o cer of the Orissa Finance Service and Late Sailabala Sarangi, a devoted homemaker.
His academic brilliance was evident early in life, culminating in a Ph.D. in Law from Sambalpur University after obtaining his LL.B. and LL.M. degrees from M.S. Law College, Cuttack under Utkal University, Vanivihar in Bhubaneswar.
He joined the Bar in December, 1985 and engaged in regular practice before the Orissa High Court, Cuttack and the Supreme Court of India, New Delhi. He is also a life member of several esteemed professional bodies, including the Orissa High Court Bar Association, Civil Court Bar Association, Criminal Court Bar Association and Central Tribunal Bar Association, among others.
Justice Sarangi's practice covered a wide spectrum of legal fields, from civil and criminal law to constitutional, service and tax matters. Known for his integrity, precision in preparation and perceptive understanding of human nature, he upheld the core principles and traditions of the legal profession throughout his career.
For his excellence and professional ethics, he was awarded the prestigious Haricharan Mukherjee Memorial Award with Gold Medal in 2002. Elevated to the Bench as a Permanent Judge of the Orissa High Court on 20 June, 2013, he served with distinction for nearly eleven years, disposing of over 1,52,000 cases and delivering about 1,500 reported judgments. His tenure as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court reflected his sound judicial insight and commitment to fairness in the administration of justice.
On 30" December, 2024, Justice Sarungi assumed charge as a Member of the National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi, continuing his lifelong dedication to justice and human dignity.
