Delhi Legislative Assembly
The historic building of the Delhi Legislative Assembly stands as a living witness to the vibrant journey of our democracy. This transition from the Imperial Secretariat to the Old Secretariat tells us how a temporary building gradually became the permanent centre of the voice of Delhi's citizens over time. When Delhi was declared the capital of the country in 1911, this building was con-structed to meet administrative requirements. Meetings of the Imperial Legislative Council and the Central Legislative Assembly were held here. The voices of the nation's great lead-ers-Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya, Sh. Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Lala Lajpat Rai, Veer Vithalbhai Patel, and many other patriots-reverberated within these walls, Mahatma Gandhi also visited this place three times. Discussions on the freedom struggle, steps in constitutional development, and the expression of public aspirations-everything is preserved within the walls of this building. Today, this very building serves as the Delhi Legislative Assembly, functioning as a platform for discussing the problems of Delhi's residents and making laws. The public repre-sentatives sitting here are the bearers of the hopes and expectations of the people of Delhi. The history of this building teaches us that democracy is about continuous awareness, dialogue, and public service. The Delhi Legislative Assembly is not limited merely to legislative functions; it also makes continuous efforts to introduce the younger generation to democratic traditions and its historical heritage. Educational tour programs are regularly organized by the Legislative Assembly for students from various schools and colleges in Delhi and its surrounding areas. Through these tours, students get the opportunity to witness this historic building closely, understand its glorious past, and become familiar with the functioning of democratic institu-tions.
